Queen's Lecture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Queen's Lectures are a series of lectures at the Technical University of Berlin , which was introduced on the occasion of Queen Elisabeth II's visit to Berlin on May 27, 1965 as a gift from the British to the city of Berlin.

On each anniversary of the visit, a renowned British scientist should give a lecture on his subject. The series was opened on May 26, 1966. One lecture took place annually until 1975, until after the lecture by Michael Swann in 1975 there was an interruption lasting over 20 years.

It was not until 1996, on the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of the TU Berlin, that the British envoy Rosemary Spencer announced the resumption of the lecture series. A year later, John R. Krebs received the honor of opening the series, which from then on takes place again annually, with a lecture.

For the 50th anniversary of the Queen's Lectures in 2015, Queen Elizabeth II attended the event in person with her husband Prince Philip , Duke of Edinburgh. Other guests of honor at the ceremony with lecture, concert and presentations of student projects were Federal President Joachim Gauck , Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller .
