Wendy Hall

Dame Wendy Hall (* 1952 in London ) is a British computer scientist. She is Regius Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton and President of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for the period 2008-2010 .

Career

Hall was born in West London. She studied mathematics at the University of Southampton. In 1984 she returned to this university and became a member of a group of computer scientists. Her research topics were multimedia and hypermedia . From this arose - before the development of the World Wide Web (WWW) - the hypermedia system Microcosm , which was characterized by an innovative way of linking documents as “meta data”. In 1994 she was appointed the university's first female professor in engineering. From 2002 to 2007 she headed the School of Electronics and Computer Science .

In 2008 she was elected President of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for the period 2008–2010. This makes her the first woman to head the ACM and the first non-US person.

Wendy Hall is next to Tim Berners-Lee Director of the Web Science Trust Initiative Web Science Research Initiative (WSRI), now the Web Science Trust .
