The Regius Professor of Computer Science is a 2013 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. Founded Regius Professor of computer science at the University of Southampton . This chair is the first and to date only Regius professorship for computer science.

History of the professorship

The Institute of Computer Science at the University of Southampton has developed into a world-class institute since its inception. The late 1980s pioneered hypermedia systems. On this basis, the institute developed the agent-based systems in the 1990s , which were later developed into web-based solutions. When a selection committee made up of academics and representatives from the business world evaluated the applications from various universities, the institute was awarded one of the twelve prestigious Regius professorships established for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The first professor was the expert in artificial intelligence and autonomous systems and robotics , Nicholas Jennings . Jennings only stayed for two years and moved to the direction of Imperial College London, where he became Vice Provost. The professorship was taken over by the computer scientist, Wendy Hall .

Jennings left the professorship to take up a position at Imperial College , where he was appointed vice provost of the university in 2016.
Wendy Hall DBE, Ph.D., FREng., FRS 2017 Hall was the first director of the Web Science Research Initiative, now the Web Science Trust, with Tim Berners-Lee . The trust was originally founded as an exchange medium with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , but developed its own ideas and procedures early on, which later became decisive for the choice of the institute in the application for the Regius Professorship.
