The Clathrinidae are a family of sponges in the class of calcareous sponges .

features

Clathrinidae are essentially tubular in structure. The skeleton is formed from three-point needles ( sclerite , spicula) made of calcite , to which two- or four-point calcite needles can be added. The cavities inside are lined by a continuous cover cell layer , the choanoderm . The water flows through the walls through openings formed by porocytes . A central tube can take on the function of a central space (spongocoel, atrium). Clathrinidae have no continuous outer layer, and the inflow and outflow systems are only poorly developed.

distribution and habitat

Clathrinidae are widespread in all seas, usually in shallow water. They are often found hidden in shaded areas such as coral sticks and underwater caves. In temperate and subtropical regions, they are larger and more common in summer during sexual reproduction.

Way of life

The original form of the Clathrinidae is a simple, non-branching tube, the so-called Olynthus. The growth takes place by longitudinal division in the middle of the tubes, which remain transversely connected to each other. These anastomizing tubes form a large network called a cormus.
