The Clathrinida are an order of sponges in the class of calcareous sponges . It is a species-rich order with variable growth forms and all stages of development, from olynthus-like sponges with simple, non-branching tubes to complex species with complex inflow and outflow systems. Type family is Clathrinidae Minchin , 1900.
features
Clathrinida are calcified sponges with exclusively free (not hypercalcified) needles ( sclerite , spicula), without hypercalcified outer layer, calcified scales or plates.
Systematics
Clathrinida is considered to be a monophyletic , homogeneous group. Borojevic et al. (1990) therefore proposed a single order Clathrinida which includes all calcinea without a hypercalcified skeleton, as opposed to a division into two orders, Clathrinida and Leucettida, as suggested by Hartman (1958).
6 families with 16 genera have been described of Clathrinida:
- Clathrinidae Minchin , 1900
- Dendyidae Laubenfels , 1936
- Leucaltidae Dendy & Row , 1913
- Leucascidae Dendy , 1893
- Leucettidae Laubenfels , 1936
- Levinellidae Borojevic & Boury-Esnault , 1986
The World Register of Marine Species also mentions Clathrinida incertae sedis Borojevic, Boury-Esnault, Manuel & Vacelet , 2002.
