Claude Jutra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Claude Jutra , actually Jutras , (born March 11, 1930 in Montréal , Canada , † on or after November 5, 1986 Province of Québec , Canada) was a Canadian film director , screenwriter and actor .

Life

Jutra studied medicine at the university in his hometown of Montréal between 1946 and 1952. During this time, from 1947, he was already making amateur films. Michel Brault, who was supposed to work as a cameraman for many Jutra films, was already at his side. Jutra was awarded a prize for his surrealist short film “ Mouvement perpétuel ”. He then went to Paris and continued his acting training, which he had started at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in Montréal, with René Simon. In addition, Jutra also took a directing course at the Canadian Arts Council.

In Canada, Jutra began working for both television and the National Film Board of Canada in 1954 . In 1957 the film " A Chairy Tale " came about in collaboration with the important experimental filmmaker Norman McLaren . In 1960 Claude Jutra shot “ Le Niger ” in Africa , a documentary about the river of the same name. It was his first major production, which also received international attention. With his autobiographical, personal work “ All in all ”, Claude Jutra made his first full-length feature film in 1963, which still clearly demonstrated its origins in the documentary film sector.

Despite the praise he received for “ All in all ”, Jutra, whose staging style stubbornly defied all commercial claims, remained without worthwhile offers for many years. His next major work, " My Onkel Antoine ", is characterized by strong moods and stylistically uncompromising subjectivity. After the film " Kamouraska " with Franco-Canada's best-known actress Geneviève Bujold in the lead role, which was released in 1973, the committed filmmaker was largely forgotten. "Jutra's best films were always unexcited snapshots from the everyday life of completely normal people, which provided information about moods and feelings, sensitivities, longings and dreams."

On November 5, 1986, Jutra, who had Alzheimer's disease, disappeared from his living environment. The convinced francophone filmmaker who advocated the separation of the French-speaking part of the country from the rest of Canada probably committed suicide shortly afterwards. His heavily decayed body was only found five months later, floating in the Saint Lawrence River . Almost 30 years after his death, a critical biography appeared about Jutra, in which the dead director was described as a pedophile .

Jutra had received an abundance of awards and honors, but in 1972 he refused to accept the English-language Order of Canada .
