Claude Paul Taffanel (born September 16, 1844 in Bordeaux , † November 22, 1908 in Paris ) was a French flutist and composer .

Life

Taffanel's father, who first taught him, was a music teacher in Bordeaux. At the age of 10, Paul appeared in public in La Rochelle , where his father was the conductor. At 14 he became a pupil of Louis Dorus in Paris , who introduced the Boehm flute to France. During his studies at the Conservatory - where he received a Premier Prix after a few months - he became a flautist first at the Paris Opéra-Comique (1862–1864) and later at the Grand Opera; there he worked as a solo flutist from 1871. At the same time he was first flutist in the orchestra of the Conservatory Society.

To promote the playing of wind instruments, he founded the Sociéte des Instruments à Vent in 1879 , with which he inspired many new compositions (such as the Petite Symphony by Charles Gounod ). Taffanel has also given concerts in Germany, England and Russia. In 1893 he became a conductor at the Paris Opera, and in the same year he received a professorship for flute at the Paris Conservatoire as the successor to Joseph-Henri Altès .

Taffanel composed mainly works for flute and piano (including opera fantasies, Andante Pastorale et Scherzettino ). Even today one still occasionally comes across his late romantic wind quintet (1876).

meaning

Taffanel can be seen as the father of the modern French school of flute playing. Many French flute compositions from around 1870 are dedicated to him. Philippe Gaubert was one of his many students , with whom he wrote the flute school Méthode complète de flûte . His student Georges Barrère wrote about him:

“I am sure (...) that Taffanel was not only the best flautist in the world, but that doubts can also be allowed as to whether a flautist will ever be able to take his place again. The beauty and richness of his tone and his precise finger technique were only a small part of his qualities as a flute player. His musicality, his musical charisma, especially his sense of style were extremely inspiring. "
