Claudia Mo

Claudia Mo ( Chinese  毛孟靜  /  毛孟静 ; * as Mo Man-ching on January 18, 1957 ), also known as Claudia Bowring , is a Hong Kong journalist and politician of the democratic camp .

Personal life and education

Mo was born in Hong Kong to a family from Ningbo (Zhejiang). She is married to the British journalist Philip Bowring, with whom she has two sons.

She attended St. Paul's Secondary School in Hong Kong and graduated in 1975. She then completed her pre-university degree in Toronto and in 1979 earned a Bachelor's degree in English from Carleton University in Ottawa.

She then worked at Agence France-Presse (AFP), where she translated despatches from French into Chinese. She was later promoted to AFP chief correspondent in Hong Kong, covering the Tian'anmen massacre , which she described as "a turning point that has cemented [her] journalistic principles and political beliefs." She then worked as a journalist for The Standard and TVB . She also moderated TV and radio programs from RTHK , including Media Watch and City Forum .

Her book We Want True Democracy was published in 2015.

Political career

In 2006 Mo was a founding member of the Civic Party . She first ran unsuccessfully in the 2008 general election in the geographic constituency of Kowloon West .

In the 2012 general election , she won one of the five seats in the Kowloon West constituency. She ran with the slogan " Against Mainlandization " ("Against the continentalization "), which sparked a controversy within the Civic Party, because the party used the slogan " Against Communistization " ("Against Communistization"). After the election she was seen as more localist within her party. With Garry Fan ( Neo-Democrats ) she founded the localist group HK First .

She was re-elected in the 2016 general election . On November 14, 2016, she left the Civic Party due to disagreements over localism, filibusters, and other issues. She claimed that she would continue to sit as a Democratic MP within the HK First group.

In 2019 the pro-Beijing deputy was Junius Ho because of sexist utterances against Claudia Mo from a meeting of the Legislative Council excluded.
