Destruction of files at the Berlin Office for the Protection of the Constitution

In the process of coming to terms with the NSU terror in 2012, deficiencies in various Berlin security authorities became apparent. At first it became known that the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) had an undercover agent in the immediate vicinity of the murderer trio, but did not inform the NSU investigative committee of the Bundestag.

At the Berlin Office for the Protection of the Constitution, headed by Claudia Schmid, important files on the case of the racist series of murders were destroyed at least twice. The documents also concerned the right-wing extremist organization Blood and Honor , which had been banned since 2000 . Contrary to the regulations, the files were not offered to the State Archives for assessment, but were destroyed by one or two employees in their own authority. The management of the house described the destruction as a "regrettable oversight". Claudia Schmid was informed about the destruction of the files during her vacation, but only informed the responsible interior senator Frank Henkel after her return . On November 14, 2012, immediately after the announcement of the destruction of the files, Schmid resigned from her position as head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
