Claus Deimel

Claus Deimel (born March 12, 1948 in Hamburg ) is a German ethnologist .

Life

Claus Deimel studied historical ethnology, political science, sociology and prehistory and early history at the universities of Frankfurt am Main and Heidelberg from 1972 to 1979. 1979 was his doctorate to Dr. phil. in Frankfurt with a thesis on the missionary history of the Tarahumara in northern Mexico. He has been researching in the Sierra Tarahumara since 1973 and has contributed monographs, images and film documentations on the economy, society and ecology in the Sierra Tarahumara, including through the medium of exhibitions at the Übersee-Museum Bremen, the Landesmuseum Hannover and the GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde Leipzig , published. He got teaching assignments at the universities of Hamburg, Hanover and Leipzig.

Claus Deimel has worked with artists and researchers from the Kwakwaka'wakw- First Nation on the northwest coast of Canada on the history of a potlatch collection and the exhibition The Power of Giving , Alert Bay, Canada, U'mista Cultural Society and Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Curated in 2011.

He was a research assistant at the Hamburg Museum of Ethnology (1981–1985), the Übersee-Museum Bremen (1985–1987), the Detlefsen-Museum Glückstadt (1990–1992) and chief curator at the Lower Saxony State Museum Hanover (1992–2000). In 2000 he was appointed director of the Leipzig Völkerkundemuseum (since 2003 GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig) and in 2004 founded the State Ethnographic Collections Saxony SES, a merger of the GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig with the Museum für Völkerkunde Dresden and the Völkerkundemuseum Herrnhut . In 2010, the SES joined the Dresden State Art Collections Association (SKD) under his leadership. Until he retired in June 2013, Claus Deimel was Deputy Director General of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
