The Clausthal Environmental Technology Research Center (CUTEC) is a research facility of the Clausthal University of Technology .

From its founding in 1990 to 2017, it was operated under the name Clausthal Environmental Technology Institute (CUTEC) in the form of a GmbH as an independent institution of the State of Lower Saxony, but was then transferred to the Clausthal University of Technology. This step was preceded by the evaluation of energy research at CUTEC and Clausthal University of Technology, in which promising cooperation relationships, particularly in the field of raw materials and recycling, were noted. The TU Clausthal becomes the legal successor to the GmbH. The CUTEC - Clausthaler Umwelttechnik Forschungszentrum will continue to actively support Germany's transformation process towards a sustainable industrial society.

history

The CUTEC Institute was founded on March 28, 1990 with the conclusion of the partnership agreement and was solely sponsored by the State of Lower Saxony. The institute had its roots in the TU Clausthal.

Five years after it was founded, the employees were able to move into the new building on the TU campus at the end of Leibnizstrasse. The driving forces on the way to the founding were the former member of the state parliament, Werner Grübmeyer, and the first managing director of the institute, Kurt Leschonski , who decisively determined the fate of the house until 2000.

After initially successful years, the CUTEC Institute was consistently in the red from 2013 and ended 2015 with a loss of more than 920,000 euros. The reason for this is seen in the political arena as a wrong orientation by the managing director appointed in 2013. The institute was considered an "absolute restructuring case". However, in the earlier years 2010 and 2011, due to economic problems, the institute had to avail itself of liquidity assistance from the state of Lower Saxony and in 2011 it posted a loss of more than 641,000 euros.

Research directions

The interaction of different process engineering disciplines in one company makes it possible to analyze, change and ultimately optimize even complex processes or process chains with regard to energy and environmental aspects. In detail, projects are taken on as funded projects or within the framework of contracts, innovative services and consulting services or reports.

The research areas of the CUTEC research center range from recycling and waste management to mobility management to energy system analysis and supply management. In addition, the center holds conferences, seminars and workshops - also in an international context.

Awards

In 2012, the process developed at CUTEC and Clausthal University of Technology for dezincification of sheet steel scrap was awarded the German Raw Material Efficiency Prize in the group of research institutions.

The research project “The bio-electrochemical fuel cell as a component of an energy-generating wastewater treatment plant” coordinated by CUTEC as part of the BMBF funding measure “ Sustainable technologies and concepts for energy-efficient and resource-saving water management (ERWAS)” won the 6th German Sustainability Award in the research category at the end of 2017 .
