Martin Faulstich

Martin Faulstich (born July 13, 1957 in Hagen ) is a German engineering scientist and political advisor . He was professor for environmental and energy technology at the Technical University of Clausthal and former chairman of the expert council for environmental issues . From 2013 to 2017 he was managing director of CUTEC GmbH in Clausthal-Zellerfeld. Since 2018 he has been director of the INZIN Institute for the Future of Industrial Society in Düsseldorf. In June 2020 he was appointed to the chair in the “Resource and Energy Systems” department at TU Dortmund University.

Scientific career

After studying mechanical engineering and process engineering in Düsseldorf and Aachen, Martin Faulstich received his doctorate in environmental engineering at the Technical University of Berlin in 1992 . In 1994 he became professor for waste management at the Technical University of Munich in Garching, from 2003 to 2012 Martin Faulstich held the chair for raw materials and energy technology, at the same time he was the founding director of the Straubing Science Center . Faulstich was also visiting professor at the Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria (1995/1996), McGill University, Montreal, Canada (1999) and at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), Potsdam (2012). From 2013 to 2020 he held the chair for environmental and energy technology at the TU Clausthal . Since June 2020 he has held the Chair of Resource and Energy Systems at TU Dortmund University.

From 2000 to 2012 he was the board member and scientific director of the ATZ development center in Sulzbach-Rosenberg , a successor to Klöckner Stahlforschung. After the successful reorientation, the ATZ was incorporated into the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. He also initiated the Fraunhofer Center for Energy Storage (CES).

From 2008 to 2016 he was chairman (since 2006 member) of the Advisory Council for Environmental Issues (SRU), the most important advisory body of the Federal Government for environmental issues.

In 2009 he was appointed President of the renowned Wuppertal Institute for Environment, Climate and Energy, which he did not accept and stayed at the Technical University of Munich.

From 2013 to 2017 Faulstich was managing director of the Clausthaler Umwelttechnik-Institut (CUTEC) in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, which, however, was not very successful economically and was in the red until it finally became a renovation case. In the political arena, the chief cause of the minus, which reached 920,000 euros in 2015, was the managing director and the wrong direction of the institute. However, liquidity assistance from the state of Lower Saxony had to be used in 2010 and 2011 and the institute had already posted a loss of more than 641,000 euros in 2011. In 2017 Faulstich handed over the management to Martin Eberhardt, who supported the transfer to the Clausthal University of Technology.

In 2014 Faulstich was appointed research area coordinator for energy systems and process energy technology at what was then the Energy Research Center Lower Saxony (EFZN) at Clausthal University of Technology.

Faulstich has been director of the INZIN Institute for the future of industrial society in Düsseldorf since 2018.

Faulstich is an appointed full member of the Academy for Spatial Research and Regional Planning (ARL), the Academy for Geosciences and Geotechnologies, the Bavarian Academy for Rural Areas as well as a member of various boards of trustees and advisory boards. a. Ifo Institute for Economic Research , Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research , International State Ecological Sakharov Institute , Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI, Nanyang Technological University Singapore) and at the International Scientific Board of the AdMas Center (Czech Republic, Technical University Brno ).

Research areas

Faulstich's work focuses on strategies and concepts for a sustainable industrial society . His chair analyzes technical value chains, develops processes for the generation and use of regenerative raw materials and energy sources (hydrogen, methane, methanol) and investigates processes for recycling secondary raw materials from residues from fermentation and combustion processes (metals, phosphorus).

During his time as Chairman of the German Government's Advisory Council for Environmental Issues, Faulstich played a key role in the discussions for a fully regenerative energy supply and for a gradual phase-out of coal-based power generation by consensus. He is currently building a think tank on the future of industrial society with several companies in Düsseldorf , in which scholarship holders are developing models and scenarios for shaping structural change.
