The claustrum or the front wall is a part of the brain belonging to the endbrain. Anatomically, it lies to the side of the external capsule and is separated from the putamen by this . Further outwards, it is separated from the insular cortex by the capsula extrema .

The functions of the claustrum, which can be found in both brain hemispheres of all mammals examined so far, have not yet been conclusively clarified. According to a series of experiments, it could play a role in sexual sensation, since at certain times the neurons in this area fire in a characteristic way. Francis Crick and Christof Koch published an article about the Claustrum in 2005 in which they speculate about its role in the integration of conscious perceptual content. The authors see in the Claustrum the conductor who synchronizes the players of an orchestra (different cortical regions).

A French working group reported in 2014 that the electrical stimulation of the claustrum (or the intermediate area between the claustrum and anterior islet) as part of the presurgical epilepsy diagnosis in a patient led to immediate loss of consciousness.
