The capsula externa (German: outer capsule ) is a relatively small collection of nerve fibers in the brain . Anatomically, it lies medial to the claustrum and separates it from the putamen . In the further course it joins the internal capsule around the lens nucleus .

Included paths of association and projection fibers

The outer capsule contains the superior longitudinal fasciculus lateral to the corona radiata . Its fibers connect the upper frontal convolutions and the precentral gyrus with parts of the parietal and occipital lobes . The uppermost fibers of the uncinate fasciculus also come to lie in the area of the external capsule. A small part of the projection fibers of the corona radiata, mainly coming from the frontoparietal operculum , also enter the external capsule. In the capsula externa and also in the capsula extrema it is mainly the long association paths that run.
