Clavularia is a little-known Indo-Pacific coral genus from the subclass Octocorallia . The coral can be found in shallow water in Indonesia , the Philippines , Melanesia and northern Australia.
features
Clavularia grows as a stolon network directly on the substrate. From this network, tubular, cylindrical calyces protrude upright. The polyps sitting in it can completely withdraw into the calyces. Like all Octocorallia, Clavularia has eight tentacles. The fletching of the tentacles is particularly pronounced. Clavularia species are often very colorful. They live in symbiosis with zooxanthellae , unicellular algae, and obtain most of the nutrients they need from the zooxanthellae.
Systematics
Clavularia is traditionally part of the tube corals (Stolonifera), a group that is now often viewed as paraphyletic . According to a cladistic study, they are the sister group of the largest Octocorallia clade, which mainly contains the genera of the actual soft corals ( Alcyoniina ) and the gorgonian-like Holaxonia . A total of more than 40 species of Clavularia have been described.
