The Holaxonia are a suborder of the Octocorallia . They belong to the gorgonian-like corals. The real sea fans (Gorgoniidae) belong to them .

Their flexible, horn-like axial skeleton (medulla) consists of individual fibers of gorgonine , between which crystalline calcium carbonate is embedded. One family, the Keroeididae, forms the calcium deposits in the form of sclerites . The interior of the medulla is a longitudinal, hollow tube that is divided into chambers. The medulla is covered by the coenenchyme from which the eight-rayed polyps grow.

Many Holaxonia live in symbiosis with zooxanthellae from which they get a large part of their nutrients. They represent a large part of the coral fauna in the coral reefs of the Caribbean and replace the leather corals (Alcyoniidae) that do not occur there .

Many zooxanthellate Holaxonia from the Caribbean, such as Plexaura , Pseudoplexaura , Plexaurella , Pseudopterogorgia , as well as Rumphella and Pinnigorgia from the tropical Indo-Pacific are well preserved in saltwater aquariums .
