Claws Mail is a free e-mail program for various common operating systems that offers a wide range of configuration options. The application is written in C and uses GTK + for the user interface. Messages are saved in MH format.

properties

In addition to e-mails, Claws Mail also serves as a newsreader . In contrast to Sylpheed , from which it was split off , it offers skins as well as the provision of functions via plug-ins , for example:

  • Subscriptions to web feeds such as RSS and Atom
  • Display of HTML mails via WebKit , the LiteHTML library or via the Dillo HTML Viewer
  • Archiving of mails
  • End-to-end encryption and signing via S / MIME and OpenPGP standards
  • Removing attachments
  • Filter rules via Perl or Python
  • Integration of calendars of the vCalendar standard such as Evolution or Outlook as well as webCal subscriptions
  • Communication with Google Address Book
  • PDF display using Poppler or GhostScript as well as attachments according to MS- TNEF (winmail.dat)
  • Server-side configuration of mail filtering using the Sieve standard
  • Spam filter and virus scanner
  • Storage of mails in mbox instead of MH format
  • Different ways to notify you of new mails, e.g. B. by activating notebook LEDs

Claws Mail is distributed as free software also in source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). Claws can be run on Unix-like systems (e.g. GNU / Linux , x BSD and macOS ) and, with minor restrictions, also on Windows operating systems. In common Linux distributions , it can be installed directly from the standard package sources .

history

The development of Claws began in April 2001 as a development version of Sylpheed , which should serve to test new features. Version 1.0.0 was released on January 18, 2005. In August 2005 it was split off into an independent software project. At first the software was called "Sylpheed Claws". Version 2.0.0 was released on January 30, 2006. On November 7, 2006 it was renamed "Claws Mail" to underline that the code is being developed independently from Sylpheed. Version 3.0.0 was released on September 3, 2007.

Claws was recommended by Chip.de in 2009 as a graphical mail client for Linux.
