Clay Shirky (* 1964 ) is an American speaker, author and consultant on the subject of the Internet . He teaches new media as an assistant professor in the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University . His lessons include the effects of the network topologies of social networks and the question of how the Internet is changing human relationships, communication and society.

Shirky's columns and articles have been published in Business 2.0 , the New York Times , Wall Street Journal , Harvard Business Review, and Wired magazine , among others . On April 3, 2008, Shirky appeared on the Colbert Report .

In his consulting work, Shirky focuses on the increasing importance of decentralized technologies such as peer-to-peer , web services and wireless networks , which represent alternatives to the client-server infrastructure that characterizes the World Wide Web . His clients include Nokia , the Library of Congress and the BBC .
