Clean Up the World is a multi-country non-profit organization founded in 1993 by the founder of Clean Up Australia, Ian Kiernan , as part of the United Nations Environment Program . The concept comes from the Australian organization of the same name (based in Sydney ).

The organization initiates an annual “Clean Up” day of action that takes place worldwide on the third weekend in September. Every year more than 35 million people in over 120 countries take part in it.

The initiative aims to motivate cities and municipalities around the world to remove waste and keep public spaces clean. In addition, Clean Up the World offers actors a free partner membership in a worldwide organization, which has to be renewed annually.

To this end, actors report their annual activity, which can consist of projects on recycling and resource conservation, tree planting, school programs or water protection and water saving programs, for example.
