description

Clermontia multiflora was a branched shrub that reached a stature height of 2 to 4 m. The elliptical leaves were broad and hairless, the leaf margins were calloused and finely notched. The length of the leaf blade was 10 to 12.5 cm, the width 2.5 to 3.2 cm. The tip of the leaf was pointed, the base of the leaf wedge-shaped. The leaf stalks were 4 to 7.5 cm long. The inflorescence consisted of seven to ten individual flowers. The inflorescence stalks and the flower stalks were 10 to 18 mm long. The inverted-cone-shaped flower cup was 7 to 8 mm long and just as wide. The purple, hairless flower envelope was 24 mm to 32 mm long and 5 to 6 mm wide. The crown tube was half upright. The pistil column and the purple stamens were hairless. The fruits were berries of unknown size and color.

distribution

Clermontia multiflora grew in the humid forests of Waihe'e in western Maui and in the area of Wailupe in the Ko'olau Mountains on O'ahu .

die out

Habitat transformation combined with overgrazing by cattle herds, agricultural use and urbanization are the main reasons for the disappearance of Clermontia multiflora . Competition with invasive plants has also likely contributed to the extinction of the species. All collections date from 1870 and this type of plant has not been identified since then.
