Coordinates: 20 ° 42 ′ S , 140 ° 30 ′ E The Shire of Cloncurry is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 47,971 km² and has about 3032 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located in the northeast of the state about 1480 km northwest of the capital Brisbane .
The largest city and the administrative seat of the LGA is the city of Cloncurry with about 2,400 inhabitants. Other localities are Dajarra, Duchess, Four Ways, Kuridala, Selwyn and Three Rivers.
history
Shire and the main town are named after the Cloncurry River , which in turn was named by the Australian explorer Robert O'Hara Burke after his cousin Lady Elizabeth Cloncurry. In the 60s of the 19th century the place grew as a mining town and in 1884 became a separate administrative district.
administration
The Cloncurry Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
