The Close Islands are a group of three small islands off the coast of the East Antarctic George V Land . They are located in the western section of the entrance to Buchanan Bay .
They were discovered by participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . Mawson named the group of islands after John Henry Collinson Close (1871-1949), a participant in the research trip.
