The Buchanan Bay is a protected bay on the coast of the East Antarctic Georg V.-country . It is located at the interface between the western flank of the tongue of the Mertz Glacier and the mainland. The Cape De la Motte limits the entrance to the bay on its west side.
The bay was discovered during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . This named it after the British oceanographer John Young Buchanan (1844-1925), a sponsor of the research trip and participant of the Challenger expedition (1872-1876).
