Cloudy Bay ("Cloudy Bay") is a bay in the Marlborough District in the northeast of New Zealand's South Island , and at the same time the name of a white wine .

Geographic term

The bay is located on the Cook Strait , the strait between the North Island and the South Island of New Zealand, and stretches for about 30 kilometers between the southern foothills of the Marlborough Sounds and White Bluff.

The delta of the Wairau River runs along the entire length of the bay and reaches the sea in two places. The lower reaches of the Wairau River and the smaller Opawa River run through a versatile farm area. Due to the Mediterranean climate, wine can be grown very well in this area. The Marlborough region is now internationally known for its viticulture . In this area, however, no wine was grown until about 30 years ago - the vineyards are the result of systematic analyzes, investigations and laboratory explorations, where in the Australian-New Zealand area there are very good conditions for viticulture due to the climatic characteristics and soil conditions.

Wine

Despite the fact that they have only been marketed since 1995, the wines from the Picton and Blenheim region , especially the varietal white wines of the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety , have achieved international fame.

The eponymous wine "Cloudy Bay" is described by critics as the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world. In the meantime, the French group LVMH has secured a minority stake in the “Cloudy Bay” winery with the champagne brand Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin . Not only Sauvignon Blanc, but also Chardonnay grows very well in this Mediterranean- like climate on the banks of the Wairau River.
