action

The two young Frenchmen Jean Taconnat and Marcel Lornan are on their way to Oran , where they want to join the French army units there for economic reasons. Due to family problems and a lack of support from relatives or friends, they see no other way to secure their economic existence. On the trip by ship to Oran, they get to know the wealthy small industrialist Clovis Dardentor. He tells the two friends that despite all his professional success, he has no heir to his fortune. The two army candidates come up with the brilliant idea that Clovis Dardentor should adopt them. This would elegantly secure their future. Clovis Dardentor, not realizing the intentions of the two traveling companions, gives a broad lecture on French legislation. One of the most important conditions for adoption is that the adoptee must have saved the life of the adoptive father. The two friends decide not to leave Dardentor to wait for the opportunity to save his life.

The first stopover on the ship passage is Mallorca . There is a first opportunity for the two friends to become a lifesaver for Dardentor. On a trip to the area around Palma , the horses and their team go through on the way back on a sloping serpentine road. But they cannot save Dardentor's life, instead he has to save the two friends.

The next stage of the journey is then Oran. There is another excursion to the city's surroundings. The army has to wait for the two friends first. But here too Jean and Marcel's plans to save their lives fail. First Dardentor saves one friend's life in a fire on the train , then he has to save the other from drowning. The two would-be adoptive sons do not get a suitable opportunity. After all, the young Louise Elissane saves Clovis Dardentor's life. She shoots a lion that attacks Dardentor. Marcel Lornans marries Louise Elissane, with whom he has fallen in love.
