Club Penguin was a browser game ( MMORPG ) for children between the ages of six and fourteen with cartoon-like landscapes and characters. Each player created an avatar in the form of a penguin . In the snow-covered landscapes, the user could wander around with his character, chat and play mini-games. Access was free. With a paid account, however, the user received additional rights, such as the ability to purchase virtual clothing, furniture and pets with virtual money.

Club Penguin was officially opened on October 24, 2005 after a test phase. The online game was created by The Walt Disney Company in August 2007, 350 million dollars of New Horizon Interactive bought. description

Each player got an igloo as a home for his character . Players with a paid account (so-called “members”) were allowed to make their igloo accessible to other penguins. They could buy furniture for their home and so change the look of their igloo. Members also had the opportunity to buy clothes from a catalog. They could also buy pets - so-called puffles - up to sixteen different colors. Depending on the color, these had a different character. The players with a normal account could buy a maximum of two puffles and the choice of colors was also limited to two. The pets led a life of their own - if they were not cared for, they would run away from their owners.

There were various public landscapes and spaces: The Town, The Plaza, The Cove, The Forest, The Snow Forts, The Dock, The Beach, The Ski Village (the ski village ), The Mountain, The Dojo, The Mine, The Icemountain (the iceberg), The Rockhopper's Ship, The Lighthouse (the lighthouse) and The Party Room. These again have various rooms with mini-games, chat facilities and the like. The main enemy of the PSA and EPF was Herbert - a polar bear. Opposite him stood the PSA-Penguin Secret Agency - in German: the PGD-Penguin Secret Service. This agency lodged in a HQ, the headquarters. Herbert destroyed the HQ, then there was only the Elite Penguin Force HQ.

The Club Penguin Times was a free virtual weekly newspaper . It was delivered to the players on Thursdays. It contained game news and entertaining such as games, comics, polls, and a calendar. As a special feature, the newspaper had the "Aunt Arctic" section for general questions about Club Penguin. The newspaper named “Penguin of the Month” every month. During the game, there was an archive of the Club Penguin Times issues from the last six weeks in the boiler room of the Night Club .

Protection of minors

In Club Penguin , children learned to use computers and the Internet independently in a playful way. The protection of minors was ensured by several factors: The moderators from Club Penguin constantly monitored the online game world and reacted to any form of misconduct - if necessary with an exclusion from the game. A security system was used to ensure that chat conversations did not lead to insults or the exchange of personal information. Two different chat variants are available for this: In the ultimate security chat , correspondence was limited to a selection of greetings, questions, statements, emotions, actions and greeting cards previously authorized by the parents. The standard security chat allowed players to formulate their own messages. These were filtered, checked by trained employees and only certain words were allowed. This supposedly prevented the exchange of confidential information, such as telephone numbers. In addition, all players were regularly asked to follow the given rules. In addition, the children were able to take action themselves and apply to be a kind of spy organization as an elite agent.

"Coins For Change" campaign

In the “Coins for Change” campaign, which has been held every December since 2007, players were able to “donate” the virtual coins they had collected to do good in the real world - for example in the form of medical help, building safe places or protecting the earth. The campaigns helped people in over 40 countries, for example by financing schools, libraries, health centers or through drinking water programs.
