St. Matthias is the Catholic church in Hüddessum , a district of the municipality of Harsum in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony . It is located at Matthiasstraße 29 and belongs to the parish of St. Martinus with its seat in Borsum , in the Borsum-Sarstedt deanery of the Hildesheim diocese .

The little baroque church in the small monastery village in the parish of Borsum, the Borsumer Kaspel , was built in 1748 with the support of Hildesheim canon Theodor Heinrich von Westrem, whose name also appears in the foundation inscription above the entrance. The first time here occurring in the diocese of Hildesheim Matthias - patronage has its reason possibly in relations Westrems to Trier , where the grave of this apostle is worshiped. In a niche above the portal, the patron saint with his martyr attribute can be seen in a lively representation.

The interior of the church, which is around 86 meters above sea level , also surprises with high-quality Baroque works of art: a ceiling painting of the Assumption of Mary above the nave and an unusual image of the Trinity above the altar. The neo-Gothic altarpiece dates from the 19th century . In the middle it shows Our Lady with the Child, on the left St. Matthias and on the right a holy bishop (perhaps Borsum parish patron Martin ). The organ was built by August Schaper in 1894 and later rearranged.

There must have been a chapel in Hüddessum even before the baroque building. However, the village always belonged to the parish of Borsum. It was not until November 28, 1894 that Bishop Sommerwerck gave Hüddessum parish rights. Since December 1, 2002, the church has belonged to the then newly founded deanery Borsum-Sarstedt, previously it belonged to the deanery Borsum-Dinklar. The Friends of St. Matthias Hüddessum eV have been supporting the preservation of the church since 2008 . Since November 1st, 2014 the church belongs to the parish of Borsum again. In the previous years, the parish Hüddessum belonged to the pastoral care unit Borsumer Kaspel .
