Clutch , also clutch bag (or even Klatsch ), is an English term for a small, elegant ladies handbag without a handle that became popular in the German-speaking world after 2000 .

description

The very small evening bag has neither a handle nor a shoulder strap, which is why a clutch must either be gripped with one hand ( to clutch = grasp, clasp tightly ) or clamped between the upper body and forearm; possibly it has an inconspicuously attached hand strap. As the small bag resembles an envelope, it will also envelope bag called. Due to its not very practical handling, the clutch can hardly keep up with the popularity of many other handbag types. It is considered a subtle accessory that should not distract from the elegant evening wear, and is now also made of fine material - for example crocodile leather , trimmed with mink fur or enhanced with gold , embroidered with pearls and crystals or feathers and rhinestones .

history

The clutch was particularly popular in the 1920s. The small bag without a handle was an ideal match for the dominant fashion ideal of the boyish, slim woman at the time. At that time it was known as the clutch bag and was widely known as the successor to the wallet. After the Second World War it came back into fashion with Dior in 1947. Today international designers such as Judith Leiber and Jimmy Choo have the clutch in their collections .
