Cnabetius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cnabetius , also Gnaretius , was a Celtic god of war who was worshiped in what is now southwestern Germany. In Gallo-Roman times, according to the Interpretatio Romana , he was identified with the Roman god Mars . At one point, if the reading is correct, he will be mentioned along with Rosmerta .

Etymology and Distribution

The name Cnabetius is probably derived from the idg * kṇbh-etos "mutilated". This would point to the frequent motif of the wounded god of war (see also Núadu Argatlám ). In a dedicatory inscription from Osterburken , Baden-Württemberg , Cnabetius is invoked as "paternal hornblower Mars Cnabetius".

Four inscriptions were found in the northern Saarland , of which at least two are in the sphere of influence of the ring wall of Otzenhausen , i.e. in the tribal area of the Treveri . In addition, Cnabetius is attested twice in Baden-Württemberg.
