Cnesterodon is a genus of viviparous toothcarps from southeastern South America .
features
These are representatives of the viviparous toothcarps that remain small and reach a maximum length of 4.5 cm, with the males remaining significantly smaller. The anal fin of the males is typically transformed into a gonopodium in the subfamily . The gonopodium is long and has a hook-shaped extension at the tip. The fish are inconspicuous gray-yellow with a silvery belly and sometimes appear glassy and translucent. The ten-spotted fish ( Cnesterodon decemmaculatus ), the type species of its genus, discovered by Charles Darwin between February 1832 and October 1835 , has a series of black dots on the side of the body.
Cnesterodon species inhabit calm waters such as ponds and ditches, which are rich in vegetation and can reach temperatures of over 30 ° C in summer.
