The Coal Nunatak is a nunatak with steep cliffs on the south side in the southeast of the West Antarctic Alexander I Island . It rises 3 km southwest of the Corner Cliffs .
Aerial photos taken by the American polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth during the first sighting during his Antarctic flight on November 23, 1935 were used by the American cartographer WLG Joerg for mapping. Ellsworth's photos show the Nunatak from the northwest, so that only the flattened peak can be seen from the surrounding ice masses. At the time, it was unclear whether it was an elevation on Alexander I Island or an island in George VI Sound . The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey clarified this through measurements in 1949. He named the Nunatak by the lenses of coal , which can be found here.
