Coalgate (scandal)
Coalgate is an Indian scandal over coal mining rights during the reign of Manmohan Singh from 2004 to 2009. It was exposed by the Indian Court of Auditors . Excerpts from the report were published by the Times of India on March 22, 2012. It is stated that the Indian state lost around 207 billion dollars because the Indian state did not publicly advertise the mining rights. The mineral resources comprise around 33 billion tons of coal and 155 mines. Besides Singh, people from the private sector are also accused of being involved in the scandal: Ratan Tata ( CEO of the Tata Group ), Anil Agarwal (Chairman of the Vedanta Group ), Lakshmi Mittal (CEO of Arcelor Mittal ) and Kumar Birla (CEO of the Aditya Birla Group ). In total, more than a hundred companies are involved in the scandal.
In the Indian Parliament , the opposition prevented the deliberations and instead demanded the full report of the Court of Auditors. On Twitter was the hashtag #Coalgate the date of publication of the most tweeted hashtag. Many were angry or made fun of Coalgate. The Minister of State Sriprakash Jaiswal , who is also in charge of the Ministry of Coal on behalf of Manmohan Singh , said that such an approach is not bad, it is just politics. If the companies had bid in an auction , higher prices would have arisen and these would have been passed on to consumers.
