The Dillinger See (also Ökosee Dillingen ) is a lake in Dillingen / Saar in the Saarlouis district .

geography

The 23 hectare lake is located in the approx. 80 hectare bird sanctuary on the western edge of the city between the district of Pachten and the Saar in a former meadow landscape . The lake runs from south to north along the Saar. In the north of the lake there is an island about 2 hectares in size. In the south, the L355 borders the lake. The lake is densely overgrown with trees and bushes and has pronounced reed zones .

history

Notice at the place where the wreck was found

The Dillinger See in Dillingen was created in the 1980s from an old arm of the Saar as part of the Saar expansion as a compensation measure for lost areas. The lake is used to regulate the river during floods.

During the construction work, a shipwreck from the 18th century was found in the northern part of the water, which was documented by the then state curator Alfons Kolling . After the scientific evaluation, the wreck was left at its place of discovery, flooded again and the place of discovery on the bank was marked with a notice board. On the circular path leading north of the lake there is a monument in the form of an anchor, which reminds of the former transshipment point of the Dillinger ironworks on the river bank, the so-called " Pähter Bock ".

Since 2004 the lake has been an EU bird sanctuary according to the Habitats Directive . Between 2006 and 2014 NABU Saarlouis / Dillingen redesigned the shore zones and the island of the lake. Several hundred meters of steeply sloping bank zones were flattened and the island was partially pushed below water level, re-modeled and shallow water zones and deep spots created. An observation hill was built on the east bank. The project was accompanied by the Ministry for the Environment and the State Office for Environment and Occupational Safety. In 2014, the city of Dillingen and NABU jointly built a four-meter-high observation tower on the west bank of the lake, from which more than 130 species of birds can be observed.

fauna and Flora

View over the eco lake

The lake is a habitat for many birds. In addition to mute swans , ducks and geese species, there are also cormorants and various herons , storks , birds of prey , bells , walnuts and gulls as well as numerous species of songbirds . Numerous insect and bat species as well as amphibians and reptiles also use the lake as a habitat. The Rions water crowfoot and the fragile candelabrum are among the rare species of flora .

use

For ecological reasons, the lake itself may not be used directly, but serves the population as a recreational area . A 3.6 km long circular hiking trail leads around the lake. The lake is also used for flood protection, as its level is about 45 cm below that of the Saar. The level difference is ensured by draining excess water to the underwater of the Rehlinger lock.

Plane crash

During the Second World War , on November 20, 1944, an American P 47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft was shot down on lease and went down in the area of what is now the eco lake. In 2000, a recovery team from the Joint POW / MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) conducted exploratory work. Contact was made with the brother of the pilot James G. Newman and appropriate soundings began. Parts of the aluminum hydraulic lines were discovered in December 2013 as part of renaturation work in the bank mud and handed over to the Dillinger History Society. At the beginning of 2014, a JPAC team was again on site and carried out interviews with contemporary witnesses and exploratory work on the east bank of the eco lake. The team was supported by Uwe Benkel and other members of the research group for missing persons . Small parts of the aircraft and duds from phosphorus bombs were found. Further exploratory work carried out on site in September 2014 by the Dillinger History Association and the Association for the Recovery of Fallen People in Eastern Europe also revealed only small parts. The fate of the pilot remains unclear.
