The Coandă-1910 was the first aircraft to be equipped with a type of thermal jet . It was exhibited by the Romanian physicist and aerodynamicist Henri Marie Coandă in October 1910 at the 2nd Paris Aviation Salon.

Drive construction

The plane had a very unusual propulsion system, a kind of thermal jet . It was a mixture of a jet engine and a piston engine . It used a common internal combustion engine to drive a compressor instead of a propeller. The compressed air was mixed with the fuel and ignited in two combustion chambers . The hot exhaust gases were directed backwards to generate thrust.

In aviation, the use of different engines is called a mixed drive or hybrid drive .

A piston engine, a four-cylinder in - line engine , water-cooled and with an output of 37 kW (50 hp), drove the compressor via a reduction gear. A thrust of 2 kN was generated at a speed of 1000 rpm.

Involuntary flight test

During the soil tests of the engine on December 16, 1910, Coandă was not aware of the power of the drive. The machine shot him into the air. He lost control and the machine crashed; in the process he was thrown out of the machine. After that, the plane burned out.

During the short flight, Coandă was able to discover hot, burning gases from the engine along the fuselage. This probably caused the machine to catch fire. He and many other scientists later investigated this effect, which is now known as the Coandă effect .

Coandă no longer pursued the development of jet propulsion. It was not until 1940 that the Italian Campini Caproni CC.2 was able to recreate such a drive.
