The Coates Rocks are a rock formation in East Antarctic Victoria Land . On the south side of the Freyberg Mountains they rise up in the north-western part of the Evans Firnfeld .
The United States Geological Survey mapped them using the United States Navy's own surveys and aerial photographs from 1960 to 1964. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1969 after Donald A. Coates, geologist of the United States Antarctic Research Program on the Hallett- Station from 1964 to 1965 and on McMurdo Station from 1966 to 1967.
