Cobalt naphthenate is a dark brown flammable solid with a gasoline-like odor that is practically insoluble in water. The empirical formula is given as CoC 18 H 12 O 4 - CoC 22 H 14 O 4 . The density is 0.9 g · cm -3 , the melting point is 140  ° C .

use

Cobalt naphthenate is used as a hardening accelerator in the oil paint industry. Metal soaps of cobalt used in this way are generally sold under the trade name Cobalt accelerator. It is also used in polyester resins , in paint dryers and as a crosslinking catalyst for unsaturated polyester resins . It is also used in the manufacture of adhesives, varnishes and sealants for textiles. It also serves as an anti-corrosion agent , lubricant and fuel additive and plays an important role as an oil drying agent .
