history

The company had its beginnings in Flight Refueling, founded by Alan Cobham in 1934, and developed the first air refueling systems . As part of the Berlin Airlift in 1948, the company became the first private company to become a strategic partner of the Royal Air Force . Through acquisitions and investments, the company grew from 1960 to become an important company in the aerospace and defense industry. The air refueling system developed by Cobham plc was used successfully during the Falklands War in 1982 ( Operation Black Buck ).

Corporate structure

The company is divided into three main areas: Mission Systems, Defense, and Aviation / Surveillance / Security. In addition to aerial refueling systems, the mission systems division also includes remote-controlled vehicles for bomb disposal, oxygen and survival systems in aircraft and space travel. In the Defense sector, products and developments for electronic warfare, radar technology and communication systems are in the foreground, while the Aviation / Surveillance sector manufactures electronic components for civil and military aerospace and the navy.

The subsidiary Cobham Aviation Services Ltd. operates an airline in Australia and offers general aviation charter services and flight training for military helicopter pilots in the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and British Army .

The sale to a US private equity firm for £ 4 billion was initially controversial for reasons of national security, but was approved by the UK government in December 2019.
