Coburg national newspaper

The Coburger National-Zeitung was the first leading daily newspaper of the National Socialists in Germany at the local level.

The Coburg district leader of the NSDAP Franz Schwede founded the weekly newspaper Der Weckruf in 1926 . After the Reichstag elections in September 1930 , he turned to Adolf Hitler and expressed his intention to convert the wake-up call into a local daily newspaper. The latter agreed to the project without, however, granting any financial support.

The only material support consisted of two used typesetting machines from the Munich printing company Müller & Sohn . From October 1, 1930, the party newspaper appeared, which was printed in the small rooms of a private printing press that belonged to a member of the NSDAP . Schwede hired Erich Kühn, who previously worked for the Coburger Zeitung , as editor-in-chief .

Swede had no intention of publishing a pure combat paper (Nazi jargon) for this daily newspaper . Rather, the newspaper should be created as a local paper, which should represent the wake-up call of the German idea in politics and business, home and art, entertainment, gymnastics and sport . However, he not only had Coburg as a sales area in mind, but also the surrounding towns of Neustadt bei Coburg , Rodach , Lichtenfels and their immediate catchment area.

At the beginning the circulation was around 1,000 copies per day, but in 1931 it rose to 1,200 copies. In 1932 the circulation grew to 4,000 copies and reached 9,300 copies in 1934 when it was merged with the newspaper Bayrische Ostmark . The concept worked so successfully that the traditional Coburger newspaper was ousted and in 1935 it ceased distribution.

On the initiative of Gauleiter Hans Schemm , the Coburg national newspaper was incorporated into Bayerische Ostmark GmbH in Bayreuth in 1934 . For the year 1937, the edition was given as 8,500 copies, which appeared six times a week with a length of 12 to 14 pages. The last edition was published on April 10, 1945.
