Coccidiphila patriciae is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of cosmopterigidae (Cosmopterigidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 9 to 10 millimeters. The species cannot be distinguished from Coccidiphila gerasimovi on the basis of external characteristics . The reason for this is on the one hand the strong similarity and the fact that only a few specimens of Coccidiphila patriciae are available.

The genital fittings of the males are so far unknown.

The female genital fittings are similar to that of Coccidiphila gerasimovi .

distribution

Coccidiphila patriciae is native to the Canary Islands .

biology

The two previously examined females of the species were bred from the seed pods of the Canary Gentian ( Ixanthus viscosus ). The caterpillars eat the seeds and pupate in a silk cocoon that is mixed with dry excrement. Inside the seed capsule, the cocoon is extended with a short, silky tube that the butterfly uses when it hatches. The moths hatch in the first third of February.
