The ixanthus ( Ixanthus viscosus ) is the only species of the monotypic genus Ixanthus and belongs to the family of the Gentian family (Gentianaceae).

description

inflorescence

The perennial herbaceous plant reaches heights of between 80 and 200 centimeters. The strong, sticky plant is usually a little woody at the bottom. The full-margined leaves are arranged opposite and heart-shaped at the base. The leaves have three parallel main nerves and are pointed eilanzettlicher shape.

The yellow flowers are supported by conspicuous, leaf-like bracts, which are somewhat fused together at the base. The flowers sit in large panicle inflorescences. The chalice is bell-shaped with five pointed tips. Flowering time is from April to June. The fruit is a multi- seeded , somewhat fleshy capsule that contains black seeds .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = about 70.

Occurrence

Ixanthus viscosus only grows in the laurel forests of the Canary Islands , with the exception of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura .
