Eccentric Jupiter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Eccentric Jupiter (usually the English expression is Eccentric Jupiter used) is a hypothetical gas planet with Jupiter- like mass and highly eccentric orbit called. Representatives of this type have been identified as exoplanets around several stars using indirect methods (usually by measuring the radial velocity of the star). They would likely absorb or throw out of orbit all of the smaller planets in the area between their periastron and apastron , making Earth-like planets extremely unlikely in such systems. Current knowledge suggests that about 7% of all stars are orbited by an eccentric Jupiter.
