Cochlodesma tenerum is a type of mussel from the family of spoonbills (Periplomatidae).

features

The same-folding housing is up to 15 millimeters long. It is unequal, with the vertebrae sitting behind the midline, about two-fifths from the posterior end. It is oblong in outline. The ratio of width to length is about 1 to 1.3. The anterior dorsal margin is longer than the posterior dorsal margin and is also significantly higher. It is slightly convexly rounded and merges into the broadly rounded front edge without a noticeable edge or kink. The posterior dorsal margin is straight and sloping more steeply than the anterior dorsal margin. The transition to the slightly convex, slightly truncated rear edge is slightly angled. The posterior margin also merges slightly broken into the broadly rounded ventral margin. The case gapes at the rear end. There is an external and internal ligament . The internal ligament sits on a cone-shaped cartilage support (resilifer). The external ligament is thin. The lock has no teeth.

The whitish, translucent skin is very thin and fragile. The ornamentation consists of strong, irregular, concentric lines. The inside edge of the case is smooth. There is a small crack in each of the vertebrae. The inside is shiny iridescent. The growth strips shine through to the inside.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species is the North American and European part of the North Atlantic including the Mediterranean Sea . It lives in deep water from 677 to 2138 meters.

Taxonomy

The species was established in 1882 by Paul Henri Fischer . It was previously placed in the genus Periploma , MolluscaBase placed it in the genus Cochlodesma .
