The Cockpen and Carrington Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Bonnyrigg in the Council Area Midlothian . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such.
history
A church is first mentioned in the area in 1176. David de Bernham , Bishop of St Andrews , consecrated the house of God in 1242. It was in use until the beginning of the 19th century and is now classified as a Category B monument. Today's Cockpen and Carrington Parish Church was built as a new parish church about 1.5 km north. The Earl of Dalhousie initiated the new building, which was realized between 1818 and 1820. During construction, plans were changed so that the church tower is visible from both Dalhousie Castle and Arniston House . The bell from 1680 was taken over from the old church.
description
The Tudor Gothic building is isolated outside Bonnyrigg on the road to Newtongrange . The Scottish architect Archibald Elliot is responsible for the design . The front facing south-west is designed symmetrically. There the four-storey bell tower rises in the middle with the two-winged main portal with a profiled reveal . Above it lie two simple tracery, composed of pointed arched windows and crowned by Tudor arches . Triple windows are installed on all sides below the roof . Buttresses stretch along the edges of the tower and end in slender corner turrets. The body is designed with a transept . Various pointed arch windows are arranged along the side façades , which are combined to form a large tracery at the transept. The roofs are covered with gray slate.
