Cocl & Seff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cocl & Seff was the name of one of the first slapstick duos in film history . From 1913 on, the two Austrians , real names Rudolf Walter (Cocl) and Josef Holub (Seff) , appeared together in numerous Austrian silent films . The core element of their comedy, a fat and a thin, each with little intelligence, was later found in Laurel & Hardy (Dick & Doof) , Pat & Patachon as well as Siegfried Arno and Kurt Gerron . One of the curiosities of the Cocl & Seff films is that, although they came from Austria, they were sometimes presented abroad as American productions, not least because of a certain similarity between Josef Holub and the American comedy star Harold Lloyd .

As with most silent films, only a few of the Cocl & Seff films have survived to this day. The Filmarchiv Austria has already struck gold several times in its search for Austrian productions in the film archives of the world, and for example in 2001 the film Seff costs 24.50 dollars and in 2002 Seff as a boy in the Cinémathèque Suisse was discovered and then restored and restored secured. Most recently, in September 2006, the stripes Cocl, Seff and the Black Hand were found in a Spanish version under the name Ora te reconosco (“Now I know you”) in the Roman Museum . A DVD with eleven Cocl & Seff films, some of which only survived in fragments , was then released at the end of 2010 as part of a book and DVD edition of the Filmarchiv Austria on the Austrian series comedians of the silent film era.
