The Cocos (Keeling) Islands Airport , also Cocos Islands Aerodrome or German Airport Cocos Island , is an airport on to Australia belonging Cocos .
The airport is located on the westernmost and largest island in the archipelago, the West Island . It is the only airport and the most important connection in the archipelago. Virgin Australia currently connects the airport with Christmas Island and Perth .
It was laid out by the Allies as a military runway from March to May 1945 and closed again in 1946 after the end of the war. In 1952 it was reopened for civil aviation. At the time, Qantas made a stopover to refuel on their flights from Australia via South Africa to Europe.
