Codex style

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Codex style is the name of a ceramic of the Maya from the Mirador Basin in Peten , during the Late Classic was manufactured.

Codex-style pottery was named after the few surviving codices , as there are great similarities with the representations they contain. The Mayan Codex style should not be confused with the Mixteca-Puebla style of the 13th to 15th centuries, which is also called the Mixtec Codex style and was also named after pre-Columbian Codices, but Mixtec , such as the Codex Nuttall and about ceramics was also used for wall paintings.

On mostly artistically very demanding everyday objects made of clay , mostly vases, but also bowls and plates, elements of the codices, both figurative images and writing glyphs , were reproduced on a cream-colored background exclusively with the colors red and black . Thematically, the decoration shows a wide variety, ranging from courtly scenes and rituals , mythology including images of gods , architecture, animals, everyday activities to prophecies and dynastic texts. The very lively and detailed scenes are mostly combined with hieroglyphic texts.

The ceramics in the Codex style were found in El Mirador , Nakbé , La Muerta, La Muralla and Zacatal. Codex-style ceramics from Nakbé were also found in a ruler's grave in Calakmul .

Thanks to robbery in particular , individual items can now be found in private collections all over the world. Few ceramics can also be viewed in museums.
