El Mirador is the largest Mayan metropolis from the pre-classical period . The ruins are in El Peten , Guatemala's northernmost department . The city was abandoned by its residents around 50 AD; It was not rediscovered until 1926 . Many representations of the bird god Vucub Caquix have been found in El Mirador .

In El Mirador there are around 35 buildings, each of which was built on a 3-step acropolis . Two of these structures are particularly large. The "El Tigre" temple is about 55 meters high. "La Danta" measures around 70 meters and is one of the largest pyramids in the world with a volume of 2,800,000 cubic meters .

In 2009, a four-meter-long and three-meter-high Mayafries was found in El Mirador, dating from around 300 BC BC and is therefore the oldest known Maya frieze . The frieze is made of limestone and stucco and shows Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué bathing in a river.

In 2016, researchers discovered a sacbé system that connected El Mirador to the surrounding areas. The total of 17 streets have a total length of 240 kilometers. The researchers who used modern laser technology speak of the first country road network on earth.
