Codman & Shurtleff is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson and manufactures pharmaceutical products and surgical instruments. It was founded in Boston in 1838 as Benjamin S. Codman & Company , making it probably the oldest medical device manufacturer in the world. Today more than 800 people are employed.

In 1842 Codman built the anesthetic mask for the first anesthetic . The company was a pure manufacturer of surgical instruments until around the 1960s , after which it turned more and more to neurosurgery .

Codman & Shurtleff, Inc. has been part of Johnson & Johnson since 1964.

Today Codman is the world's leading manufacturer and distributor of products for neurosurgery . The portfolio ranges from shunt systems for the supply of hydrocephalus patients, monitors for multimodal brain tissue monitoring, plate systems and pneumatic high-speed drilling systems to bipolar coagulation systems for neurosurgery. The historical legacy is also continued with the Surgical Instruments division. Codman now offers a total of around 4000 different articles.

With the help of fully implantable drug pumps, Codman has also been active in the field of pain and spasticity therapy since summer 2001. For this purpose Codman offers both the gas pressure driven Archimedes constant flow pump and the gas pressure driven programmable pump Medstream .

Codman's products are distributed in Germany by Johnson & Johnson Medical GmbH.
