Walter Michaeli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walter Michaeli (born June 4, 1946 in Wetzlar ) is a professor emeritus for plastics technology and was head of the Institute for Plastics Processing (IKV) at RWTH Aachen University until July 2011 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1966, Walter Michaeli studied production engineering at RWTH Aachen University, graduated in 1971 and received his doctorate in 1975 at the IKV with a thesis on the analysis of the flat film and sheet extrusion process. From 1974 to 1979 he headed the " Extrusion and Injection Molding " department at IKV . 1981 followed the habilitation on the subject of "extrusion tools". After eight years of industrial activity in managerial positions at Freudenberg in Weinheim and Kaiserslautern , he accepted the position of professor for plastics processing at RWTH Aachen University in 1987. In 1988 he took over the management of the IKV as the successor to Georg Menges and held the chair for plastics processing at RWTH Aachen University from 1989 to 2011. In July 2011, when he reached the age limit, he handed over the management of the IKV and the chair for plastics processing to his successor Christian Hopmann.

Walter Michaeli has been chairman of the AiF's Scientific Council since 2004 . From 1996 Michaeli was a member of the jury of the German Future Prize, the Federal President's Prize for Technology and Innovation; from 2001 to 2006 he was chairman of the jury. He is a full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (since 2006), the German Academy of Science and Engineering ( acatech ) and is an honorary member of numerous boards, advisory boards, boards of trustees and working groups.

Act

Michaeli's scientific work spans the arc between the requirements for a plastic component documented in the specification sheet, questions about material selection, the dimensioning of plastic components, the design of the tools and machines required for this, their operation and the resulting influences on the internal properties (orientations, internal stresses , crystalline superstructures) and their effect on the macroscopic external component properties, right through to quality assurance and management concepts in plastics technology. This integrative approach is methodologically and comprehensively backed by modeling and computer-aided simulation. His application-oriented research deals with the broad spectrum of structural polymers and specific issues relating to functional polymers.

He has written several specialist books and is co-editor of a number of specialist journals:

  • Advances in Polymer Technology (John Wiley & Sons, New York)
  • Journal of Plastics Technology / Kunststofftechnik (WAK, Hanser, Munich)
  • Plastics / Plastics International (Hanser, Munich Vienna)
  • Progress in Polymer Processing (Polymer Processing Society, Canada)
  • Series in Materials Processing (Springer Verlag)

honors and awards

In 1998 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . In 2002, together with André Brunswick and Tim Jüntgen, he received the VDI Innovation Prize for the development of water injection technology (WIT), a process for the injection molding of hollow bodies made of thermoplastics .

In May 2009 Michaeli received the Federal Cross of Merit , 1st class, on the proposal of the then Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia , Jürgen Rüttgers . The reason given was that Michaeli supported "through his diverse voluntary activities [...] the federal and state governments in their efforts to improve the competitiveness of the economy".

In November 2010 he received the Otto von Guericke Medal, a rare award from the AiF for his "services to building bridges between science and business," as the reason stated.
