Coenomyia ferruginea is a fly from the family of stink flies (Coenomyidae).
features
The flies reach a body length of 14 to 20 millimeters. Their brown colored body is built relatively thick and has an elongated, cylindrical shape. The males have a black base color and have light spots on the edges of the tergites on the abdomen. The females are brown-yellow in color and have yellow-coated abdomen segments. The wings are tinted brown-yellow, their Costa loader runs around the entire wing.
Occurrence and way of life
The species is distributed from Western Europe to the south of Siberia and North America . The animals occur in low and high mountains, especially near watercourses, and there rest on the vegetation. They feed on nectar and honeydew and in certain situations can give off a penetrating smell, which is also described as a cheese smell. The larvae live in the upper layers of humus-rich soils and in dead wood. There they feed on detritus and other insect larvae.
